'Outmanned' City falls

The Little Hawks’ previous wins this season were all against Mississippi Athletic Conference (MAC) schools, but No. 2 Bettendorf wasn’t having any of that Tuesday, beating City 61-40 in Iowa City.

“There’s some pride in our conference and representing that way,” Bettendorf coach Curtis Clark said. “The last couple years the (Mississippi Valley Conference) has had their way with us. It was nice to get a win.”

Bettendorf improved to 11-0 on the season, one of four remaining undefeated teams in Class 4A.

City (4-8) got behind early and watched the Bulldogs come out of halftime on a 14-0 run.

“We came out and missed two or three easy shots,” City coach Don Showalter said. “When you don’t get those shots, you come down the floor with your head down and they get easy shots.

“Then the lead balloons to more than you’d like it to.”

Up 34-21 at half, Bettendorf junior center Nicholas Baer scored the first 10 points of the second half for the Bulldogs, including a pair of 1-and-1 buckets in the paint.

City didn’t score until about the 2:48 mark in the third quarter with a 3-pointer from Andy Hein. But the damage had been done.

The City offense shot just 14-of-42 (33 percent) from the floor on the game. Hein was the only Little Hawk to score in double digits with 14 points.

“You make shots and everything looks great,” Showalter said. “The games you don’t make shots, you’re looking for something different. I’m not sure we have it on a consistent basis.”

City also lost the rebounding battle 40 to 22 and were hurt by missed opportunities and an offense that couldn’t find the cracks in a solid Bulldog defensive unit.

“Our biggest problem is we can’t put anything consistently together,” Showalter said. “Bettendorf looked like the No. 2-ranked team tonight. They shot well and played great defense.”

Bettendorf shot 24-of-50 from the field. Baer led the Bulldogs with 16 points, but Cole Clearman added 13 points and Kendal Jacks had 12.

For the Little Hawks, only three players took more than three shots. Ladarius Taylor had seven points, Hein 14, and Malin Craig four.

“Right now, we are probably outmanned,” Showalter said. “We just have to get over the fact. We have to play consistently with a better effort.”

The City High schedule has been loaded with top-five teams lately. Before Bettendorf, City lost to Dubuque Senior 50-44 a week ago, and to top-ranked West High 69-39 before Christmas.

The Little Hawks have wins over Davenport Central, Davenport West, Muscatine and Burlington, but have yet to get an MVC win.

City travels to Cedar Rapids Kennedy (6-3) on Friday.

“This game, in this place in our schedule, was not real good timing for us in a year when we’re restructuring,” Showalter said. “And our league is so good.”
