Turns out Rancho Mirage High School will not have to wait until next year to host its first varsity football game.
Due to unsafe field conditions at Palm Springs High School, the much anticipated rivalry football game between Palm Springs and Palm Desert has been moved to Rancho Mirage, the school that opened its doors last month.
Joan Boiko, the communication manager of Palm Springs Unified School District, noted that glass slivers were discovered in the soil amendment spread over the football field earlier this week.
The move could take away Palm Springs’ home field advantage. The Indians have won 32 of their last 33 games at home.
The two head coaches, Dan Murphy and Pat Blackburn, briefly discussed playing the game Saturday at an alternate location until Rancho Mirage emerged as a possible location.
“We both wanted to play the game tonight,” Murphy said. “So we looked at this as an option and we’re both fine with it.”
As a result, the new high school will get its first dose of varsity football sooner than expected.
Rancho Mirage High School is located at 31001 Rattler Rd Rancho Mirage, which is East of DaVall and North or Ramon.
