Ron Johnson ran for a pair of first quarter touchdowns as Palmetto Ridge knocked off Mariner in a game postponed due to weather.
Johnson, a senior, ran for 179 yards on 20 carries, scoring from 3 and 83 yards. Senior Marcus Smith added two more scores and 91 yards rushing on five carries.
“We got out to an early lead, but I think we coasted a little and got sloppy,” said Bears coach Ryan Mitchell. “I think the boys may have gotten four hours of sleep last night, but it’s not an excuse. We have a lot to work on still.”
The Tritons (0-2) responded to the Bears’ 21-0 lead with a 12-play, 70-yard drive finishing in a Brennan Williams 3-yard score, but they could get no closer. Senior Leo Reyes led the team with 142 yards rushing on 23 carries.
“We’re getting a lot better,” said Mariner coach James Hale. “I think we played three good quarters of football, but that first quarter we didn’t play any defense. We’ve got to put four good quarters together.”
The Tritons reached the red zone five times, but scored only once. Twice they turned it over inside the five, once on a tipped pass that was intercepted, and another on downs.
