Parkway Tournament postponed until Thursday, moved to Airline

Parkway basketball and coach Mike Guess “can’t catch a break.”

Not only is Guess missing most of his basketball roster because Parkway’s football team made a magical run to Saturday’s Class 5A state championship, he won’t even have his own gym for the Parkway basketball tournament that was scheduled to start Wednesday.

Because of a broken water mane along Barksdale Boulevard on Wednesday, the tournament will be moved to Airline and postponed a day. The tournament will take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

“We can’t have 600 folks there without flushing a toilet,” Guess said.

This is the first Parkway tournament in at least six years, and Guess said he always enjoyed bringing his Byrd teams to play elite competition in the old Parkway tournament.

“We want to build it back up to that, and I’m really pleased that we got eight teams to come this year,” Guess said of the double-elimination tournament.

The short-handed Panthers will play Northwood in the third game Thursday, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Texas High and Northshore tip off the event at 3:30 p.m. followed by Southwood-Fair Park at 5 p.m. and Airline-Plain Dealing at 8 p.m.

If Parkway advances to Saturday’s action, Guess said his team will forfeit and make their way down to New Orleans to cheer for the football team.
