MONROE — Pelican All Saints High School won its second consecutive boys’ basketball state championship Friday and it could be the school’s last.
Zikiteran Woodley led all scorers with 28 points and hit a crucial jump shot and an “and-1” with 12 seconds left to lift No. 2 Pelican to a 61-59 win over top-seeded Atlanta in the Class C title game at Fant-Ewing Coliseum in Monroe.
Superintendent Dr. Cade Brumley said Feb. 14 that the DeSoto Parish school would close amid budget woes. The Jaguars (22-8) haven’t lost since the announcement was made.
Atlanta (26-5) was led by Kentrel Sapp’s 22 points while his brother and teammate, Taren Sapp, missed a potential game-winning 3-point shot with four seconds left. Steve Evans added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs.
