Peoria entered Friday night’s contest against Phoenix Barry Goldwater as one of just two undefeated teams in Division III. It did not take long for No.6 Peoria to show why it has yet to be beaten.
Peoria dominated from its first possession to claim a 48-13 road win in a Division III, Section I game.
After holding Goldwater (3-5 overall, 2-2 section) to a three and out on its first possession of the game, Darrius Aguirre took a handoff 53 yards for a touchdown on Peoria’s first offensive play of the night.
Peoria (8-0, 4-0) never looked back.
On its second offensive series of the game, Peoria’s quarterback, Anthony Guevera, scored the team’s second touchdown on a 2-yard run.
Not to be outdone by the offense, Andrew Vega scored Peoria’s third touchdown of the first half when he returned an interception 70 yards to the end zone, pushing its lead to 20-0.
Senior quarterback Dillon Gragnano entered the game for Peoria with four minutes remaining in the half and proceeded to connect with Kahliq Muhammad for an 80-yard touchdown pass, putting Peoria up 27-0.
Things got interesting late in the half, however, when Goldwater quarterback Kooper Ray threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Ronnie Reed with 21 seconds remaining to cut Peoria’s lead to 27-6.
After recovering a Peoria fumble on the ensuing kickoff, Ray hit Danny Reyes for a 17-yard touchdown with 9 seconds remaining to make it 27-13, giving Goldwater players and fans some much needed enthusiasm.
The enthusiasm would not last long however, as Peoria’s Evan Ford proceeded to return the following kickoff for a touchdown as the first half expired, giving Peoria a 34-13 halftime lead.
Peoria began the second half much like it did the first, with a 59-yard touchdown run by Aguirre, increasing its lead to 41-13.
Peoria continued to flex its offensive muscles in the fourth quarter when Akeem Rutledge scored the game’s final touchdown on a 14-yard run, making the final score 48-13.
Peoria will take its undefeated record on the road next week as it travels to Peoria Sunrise Mountain, while Goldwater (3-5) will travel to Glendale Cactus.
