Pepper fires a no-hitter in Central's victory over Lacey

Central pitcher Stephanie Pepper didn’t have quite the game Toms River East’s Jordan Weed had in the first round of the Ocean County Tournament, but the sophomore was dominant as the Golden Eagles scored a 5-1 victory over Lacey.

Pepper fired a no-hitter — the Lions’ only run scored on an error in the fifth — while walking four and striking out 13, and Kylie Smolock slugged a three-run home run in the third to propel Central (7-1). Smolock finished 3-for-4 with four RBI.

The seventh seed, the Golden Eagles will face Weed and the Raiders in the OCT quarterfinals.

OCEAN 3, NEPTUNE 0: Gianna Kinhofer allowed a hit and two walks while fanning 13, and bashed a three-run homer to left-center in the bottom of the third, as the Spartans (8-1, 6-1) captured the Class B North victory. Neptune’s Kelly Jardine broke up Kinhofer’s no-hitter with a single to right with one out in the top of the seventh.

TR NORTH 4, BRICK MEM. 1: Ashley Hussey allowed just one hit and two walks while striking out two, and Taylor Ward and Riley Vuyovich each swatted a pair of hits, as the Mariners scored the three-run victory in Class A South. North (7-1, 6-1) scored once each in the second and third before adding two more in the sixth to seal the win.

RED BANK 6, FREEHOLD 1: Morgan Schroll and Jess Stevenson each went 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Jamie Mannino added two hits and an RBI, as the Bucs cruised in B North. Winning pitcher Katie Serkus scattered four hits, giving up three to Freehold’s Gabby Romanowski, struck out four and walked one.

RARITAN 7, HOLMDEL 1: Daniella Marino went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and Bethany Evans went 2-for-4 with a double, and winning pitcher Emily Schaffer allowed two hits and a walk while fanning six, as the Rockets (7-5, 5-3) captured the A Central victory. Kelly Guerin hit a triple for the Hornets.

MANASQUAN 9, SHORE 1: Cate Marotta went 2-for-3 with a third-inning homer and Quinn Saito went 2-for-3 with a two-run double, while pitcher Olivia Galinis struck out five and walked two during the Warriors’ A Central win. For Shore, Abby Wortman went 2-for-3 and Casey Ronan laced an RBI single in the sixth.

PINELANDS 11, OAKCREST 1: Naomi Stas earned the victory in the pitcher’s circle by allowing one hit and three walks while whiffing 10, and Corinne Huber swatted a double while Breanna Wilson whacked a triple, as the Wildcats (7-3) rolled in a nonconference contest.

JACKSON LIB. 12, TR SOUTH 0: The Lions roared in a nondivisional win, as Danielle Budden drilled a two-run homer in the first to stake Liberty to a lead while Adelle Hickman went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer in the third. Chelsea Czapkowski and Amy Hickman also poked a pair of hits during the rout, while South’s Amanda Murray finished 2-for-2.
