Player removes helmet to chase QB

Trenton (Fla.) freshman defensive tackle Josh Mathis wasn’t going to let anything slow his pursuit of Blountstown quarterback Dylan Lee in the final seconds of Friday’s Class 1A title game, least of all his pesky 4-pound helmet.

Watch as Mathis removes and tosses aside his own lid while chasing Lee, who throws an incomplete pass on the play.

National Federation of State High School Associations rules dictate that a player whose helmet comes off during a play is required to leave the game for at least one down. Furthermore, Rule 9-6-4 states that it is illegal “for a player whose helmet comes completely off during a down to continue to participate beyond the immediate action in which the player is engaged.”

Mathis appeared to sit out the final play of Trenton’s 14-0 win.
