Prep baseball: Legion offense erupts in win

An offensive outburst lifted the Manitowoc America Legion baseball team to a 19-2, five-inning win over Marquette (Mich.) in pool play of the Central Wisconsin Classic, Friday morning.

With the win, Manitowoc improved to 2-0 in pool play.

A two-run home run from Ben Kohls highlighted a three-run first inning for Manitowoc.

The Legion distanced itself from Marquette with six more runs in the second inning, to grab a 9-1 lead after two frames.

In total, Manitowoc pounded out 15 hits, with 10 different players recording a hit.

Brennan Mrotek received more than enough run support to pick up the win, tossing all five innings and giving up just one earned run on five hits. He struck out four and walked two.

Nick Spurney went 3-for-4 with three RBI for the Legion, while Kohls also finished the game with three RBI.

Results from Manitowoc’s game against Chippewa Falls were not available to the Herald Times Reporter by press deadline.
