With light flurries dropping to start the game, the Manitowoc Lincoln baseball team was undeterred, defeating Green Bay East on Saturday 6-2 at Fox Cities Stadium.
The Ships and Red Devils meet once a season in Appleton, which Lincoln coach Bruce Steinbecker considered a blessing.
“Fox Cities Stadium was probably the only baseball stadium in northeast Wisconsin that was ready to play on,” said Steinbecker, who was anxious to play the first game of the season. “We saw it snowing to start which made the conditions brutal but our guys pulled it out.”
Brennan Mrotek took care of business for the Ships, throwing four innings for the win with six strikeouts and six walks. Mrotek also led Lincoln offensively, falling short of the cycle by a home run. He was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a single, double and a triple while adding one RBI.
Steinbecker credited two players on defense for preserving the win, Nick Spurney and catcher Brady Ferry. Spurney turned an unassisted double play with Lincoln holding a 3-1 lead in the fourth while Ferry blocked several pitches which hit the dirt to keep runners in place and prevent a few runs from scoring.
