If you’re fan of offense, tonight’s meeting between the Roncalli and host Valders boys basketball teams shouldn’t disappoint.
The Vikings (4-0, 3-0 Olympian Conference) have scored no fewer than 66 points this season, including a pair of 85+ performances, while the Jets (3-1, 3-0 OC) put up between 70 and 75 points in there three wins.
The lone time Roncalli didn’t crack the 70 mark was during a 52-39 loss on Saturday at the Terry Porter Classic to Milwaukee Vincent, a Division 1 school which nearly quadruples the Jets in enrollment.
Roncalli enters the game ranked No. 4 in D3 according to the Wisconsin Sports Network coaches poll while Valders was a preseason honorable mention in the same poll for D3 as well.
What makes the game interesting is neither squad completely relies on one player, focusing more on a balanced attack.
The Vikings have four players averaging at least 10 points per game in Thomas Schwoerer (15.7 ppg), Paxton Korslin (13.3), Forrest Fenlon (12.0) and Zack Goedeke (11.3). For the Jets, Nick Stelzer’s 17.0 ppg leads the way followed by Shane Johnson (11.0) and Josh Erickson (10.0).
Another intriguing aspect is while the offenses for both sides are proficient, their defenses have also helped keep opponents in check. Roncalli has limited the opposition to no more than 41 points in its three wins and Valders has not allowed more than 45 points in three of its four victories.
Once the two sides have faced each other after tonight, they’ll be that much more informed for the rematch on Jan. 30 at Roncalli with a conference title potentially on the line.
