It’s safe to say that neither the Manitowoc Lincoln nor the Roncalli girls basketball team has jumped out to the starts they each hoped for.
The Ships and Jets will each step onto the court with identical 2-4 records when the two teams tangle on Friday night at 6 p.m. in the JFK Fieldhouse. The game is the nightcap of the first day of action at a four-team tournament hosted by Lincoln. Port Washington (3-4) and Oconto Falls (4-0) square off in the matinee at 2:15 p.m.
It’s worth noting that the season is still young. Including Friday’s contest, Manitowoc has 15 games left on the slate, Roncalli has 16.
As of late, this matchup has belonged to the Ships. Lincoln has come out on top in four of the last five meetings.
The Jets’ last win in the series came back on Dec. 29, 2008.
Offensively, Lincoln is led by junior guard Alyssa Fischer, who is averaging 18.2 points per game. Fischer scored 10 points for Lincoln in a 54-36 win over Roncalli last season.
Sophomore post player Alex Cliff has proven to be the Jets’ primary scoring threat this season. She is averaging a team-high 9.5 points per game this season. Cliff tallied eight points and collected six rebounds the last time these two clubs met.
A fast start will be critical if Roncalli is to snatch a road victory. The Jets have lost four straight games and were tied or trailing after the first quarter in three of them. On the flip side, Roncalli had the lead after the opening eight minutes in both of its wins. The same can be said for Lincoln.
The key factor for the Ships will be their defense. When Lincoln is on its game defensively, it can be an opponent’s worst nightmare. Manitowoc forced 22 turnovers in 32 minutes against Sheboygan South earlier this season and held Green Bay East to just 13 points last week.
The matchup promises to be an entertaining affair and both teams hope that Friday will mark a step in the right direction.
