Surprise shutout: Plaehn allowed just two hits in the Cougars’ 4-0 victory over defending Diamond Classic champion and perennial Division 1 power Grand Ledge on Tuesday. It came in the second game of a doubleheader where the Comets scored in the top of the eighth inning to win the first game 9-8. Plaehn, who also went 2 for 3 with a double in the second game, earned all-league and all-district a year ago while helping the Cougars to a state runner-up finish in Division 3.
From coach Andrew Smith: “He pitched great against Grand Ledge. He just had all of his pitches working. He really challenged hitters, and used the defense behind him as well. Grand Ledge always has a great team. The result in the scorebook was more than we hoped for, but we knew he (Plaehn) was going to be a good pitcher. He’s really worked hard in the offseason. So it didn’t surprise us he threw as well as he did. As a hitter, we’re always looking to back him off, and keep him swinging at strikes. He’s always looking to be aggressive at the plate, and he had a couple of hard-hit doubles. He gets the team going out of the No. 2 spot. He’s a great guy to have there.”
