Prep boys basketball: Raiders rally past Ships in OT

Trailing 53-44 after three quarters, the Two Rivers boys basketball team stormed back to beat host Manitowoc Lincoln on Saturday 80-70 in overtime.

Starting in the fourth, the Raiders outscored the Ships (0-1) 36-17 through the final two frames to give Two Rivers (1-2) its first win of the season.

“We had to tighten up our defense in the second half,” said Two Rivers coach Randy Fredrikson. “They were getting in the lane too easy but we corrected it.”

The Raiders got a team-high 23 points and five 3-pointers from Dexter Smith while teammates Ethan Willman (20), Brett Slaby (19) and Austin Rehrauer (13) were all in double figures.

While not the leading scorer, Slaby had an all-around impact for Two Rivers. He grabbed five rebounds, had a team-best four assists while going 11-for-15 from the free-throw line. No other player for the Raiders had more than five free-throw attempts.

“We switched in the second half and Slaby was able to get fouls off the dribble drive,” Fredrikson added.

Willman was also all over the floor for Two Rivers, snagging six rebounds and three steals, both team highs. What made Willman’s 20-point effort more impressive was it all came in the second half.

“Ethan had a phenomenal second half,” Fredrikson said of Willman’s performance. “When we have four starters in double figures you feel pretty good offensively. We just need to work on our defense.”
