The Roncalli boys basketball team forced 13 turnovers in the first half for an early lead and never looked back in a 57-31 road win over Valders on Thursday.

The Jets, who had five turnovers in the first half, led 12-6 at the end of the first quarter after holding Valders scoreless for the first four minutes.

A 3-pointer by the Vikings’ Forrest Fenlon tied the game at 12-12 with six minutes left in the second quarter and that would be as close as Valders (5-5, 3-4 Olympian Conference) got the rest of the way.

Roncalli (9-1, 7-1 OC) responded with an 11-0 run — highlighted by a pair of Nick Stelzer 3-pointers — and after a Stelzer 3-pointer at the buzzer it was 29-18 at halftime. The Jets had 11 3-pointers in the game.

Stelzer made four 3-pointers in the second quarter and had all 15 of his points in the first half. Roncalli’s Nate Lassila finished with a game-high 16 points while teammate Isaiah Bessert added nine on three 3-pointers.

For Valders, Zach Goedeke had a team-high 15 points while Fenlon and Thomas Schwoerer each added six points. Schwoerer and Fenlon had two 3-pointers each to account for all four of Valders’ 3-pointers.

The Vikings were held to 13 points in the second half — two in the fourth quarter — as the Jets led 48-29 entering the final frame.

Valders shot 3-of-9 from the free-throw line to Roncalli’s 4-of-8 performance.
