Prep boys basketball: Roncalli tops Wrightstown

After trailing for most of the first half, the Roncalli boys basketball team heated up in the third quarter and held off a Wrightstown rally to earn a 51-46 road win on Friday night.

The win was Roncalli’s (12-3, 9-3 Olympian Conference) third in a row and ended Wrightstown’s (13-3, 10-3 OC) four-game winning streak in the final game of an eight-game home stand for the Tigers. The victory puts the Jets at the No. 2 spot in the OC behind Brillion (14-2, 11-1). Wrightstown plays at Brillion on Thursday.

With Roncalli’s Nate Lassila scoring the Jets’ first eight points, Wrightstown ended the first quarter on a 7-0 run to make it 15-8 entering the second frame.

Sam Scheer made a 3-pointer to end Lassila’s scoring streak for Roncalli, but with 4:55 left in the first half Wrightstown took its biggest lead of the night at 23-13.

The Jets rebounded, though, with an 8-0 run and a Lassila 3-pointer at the buzzer cut the Jets’ deficit to 23-21 entering halftime.

Lassila had 13 points in the half and finished with a team-high 23 points. Also for the Jets, Josh Erickson had nine points while Scheer added eight. Only three Wrightstown players scored in the game.

Roncalli was outrebounded 19-11 in the first half while Wrightstown committed just four turnovers.

With 3:32 left in the third quarter Scheer once again struck from 3-point range to give Roncalli a 33-31 lead, its first since late in the first quarter. Roncalli took a 39-34 lead into the fourth quarter.

It was all Roncalli from there, as Josh Erickson hit a pair of 3-pointers on the Jets’ first two possessions of the frame to give Roncalli its biggest lead at 45-34 with 5:54 left in the game.

The Jets finished with nine turnovers to Wrightstown’s 18 while the Tigers won the rebounds category 27-19.
