Brian Morton scored 37 points, including two free throws with 30 seconds remaining to make it a two-possession game, as Eastern upset Class B fifth-ranked Sexton 54-48 on Friday night at Don Johnson Fieldhouse.

The Big Reds (7-4, 4-3) pulled ahead 6-0 before Morton scored 18 points in a 22-2 run that gave the Quakers (5-6, 4-3) their largest lead of the game at 22-8.

Sexton narrowed the gap to 26-21 at halftime

Trevor Manuel, who scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds, pulled Sexton as close as 46-45 with three minutes left when Dar’Relle Welch, who had 10 points and 11 rebounds, fouled out.

But Morton sank five of his 19 free throws in 22 attempts to seal the win.

Nate Lafayette answered with a two-pointer to put Okemos down just one, but that was as close as the Chiefs would get.

Akil Mitchell added 21 points for the Trojans (5-5, 3-4) in the CAAC Blue win. The Chiefs (6-5, 3-4) were led by Lafayette with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Peter Nichols had nine points for Okemos and Darius Morris dished out six assists.
