Prep boys basketball roundup: Lincoln cruises past Green Bay West

A week after upsetting Bay Port on the road, the Manitowoc Lincoln boys basketball team got its second-straight win on Tuesday by defeating visiting Green Bay West 65-37.

With the flu bug ravaging the Ships squad, forcing Ben Kohls and Austin Mecca to miss the game, Lincoln (5-8, 3-4 Fox River Classic Conference) came out firing and took a 23-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Kyle Hoffman led Lincoln with a team-high 13 points and two 3-pointers points while teammate Orlando Bennett added nine.

The shorthanded Ships continued to fire on all cylinders to start the second quarter on a 12-0 run before the Wildcats woke up behind 35-12 midway through the frame.

Lincoln cooled off slightly as the second quarter wore on, but West never got its footing offensively as the Ships built a 43-17 halftime lead.

The Wildcats committed several first-half turnovers compared to Lincoln’s three, which helped the Ships sustain momentum on offense in the half court.

Another factor in Lincoln’s favor was second-chance opportunities, with Bennett snagging key offensive rebounds for the Ships, who then converted them into points.

West began to gain traction offensively in the second half, but still trailed 47-22 with just less than four minutes left in the third quarter.

Lincoln’s lead ballooned to 30 points at 52-22 when the horn sounded to end the third quarter.

The Wildcats went from scoring the first five points in the third quarter to not scoring a point until the start of the fourth quarter. Lincoln continued to pile on the points, taking advantage of more than 20 West turnovers.

The Ships put the game into cruise control in the final quarter. West scores 15 points in the frame but Lincoln added 13 of its own.

Lincoln plays Game 2 of a four-game home stand on Friday against Ashwaubenon.
