Prep boys basketball: Ships swat visiting Hornets 57-33 on Senior Night

The Manitowoc Lincoln boys team did what the Ships girls team did the night before, dispatching a team from Green Bay on Senior Night to send off the seniors with a win. Lincoln defeated Green Bay Preble 57-33 on Friday behind seniors Austin Mecca and Jake Rohrer.

Mecca and Rohrer each ended their home careers with double-doubles, as Mecca scored a game-high 15 and Rohrer 10 while each had 11 rebounds.

The Ships jumped out to an early 13-0 lead over the Hornets before Preble could get on the scorer’s sheet. Lincoln came out hot shooting with Kyle Hoffman draining a pair of 3-pointers.

When the horn sounded to end the first quarter the Ships held a 16-6 advantage as the Hornets took advantage of a few turnovers to avoid letting the game get out of hand early.

Preble began to cut into the lead a little bit but Mecca made key shots when it mattered in the second quarter to help fend off the Hornets advances. Lincoln’s lead was narrowed to 21-17 before Mecca made another bucket in the paint and drew a foul.

It was just the spark the Ships needed as Lincoln finished off the half on a 6-0 run to head into halftime up 27-17.

Lincoln’s defense really tightened up to begin the second half, limiting Preble to contested shots while continuing to work the ball inside offensively to Mecca. The Ships outscored the Hornets 16-6 in the third quarter to take a 43-23 advantage into the final frame.

Just like they did earlier, Preble whittled away Lincoln’s lead to 14 midway through the fourth. The Ships’ Patrick Johnson nailed his second 3 of the game to half the Hornets run and extended his teams lead to 49-33 with just under four minutes left in the game.

Johnson’s 3-pointer was the start of a 11-0 run to close out the game running away over Preble.

Lincoln will begin its postseason as the No. 6 seeded team in the WIAA Division 1 regional against No. 3 Bay Port next Friday.
