Prep boys basketball: Spitzley, Pewamo-Westphalia boys defeat rival Fowler

By

WESTPHALIA TWP. – Nick Spitzley shrugged off illness to score 20 points as Pewamo-Westphalia remained undefeated in CMAC boys basketball play with a 53-37 home win over rival Fowler Wednesday night.

“He wasn’t even going to play at 4:30. He was sick at home,” P-W coach Luke Pohl said. “He was able to rejuvenate a little bit, and I thought he played pretty well considering he wasn’t feeling good.”

Spitzley scored five of his team’s points in a 7-1 run that opened the game, and which may have set the tone for the contest.

“I thought we were a little impatient on the offensive end,” Eagles coach Eric Buhr said. “We stressed in practice that we wanted to be under control and poised, but in the first four or six minutes of the first quarter, we really didn’t do that.”

The Pirates (12-1, 10-0) led 23-14 after two quarters, but broke the game open in the third by scoring the first eight points and holding the Eagles (7-7, 5-5) to just two field goals to take a commanding 38-19 lead into the fourth.

Pohl said that he got quality minutes deep into his bench after the break.

“We had a group out there at one time with three reserves, and they did just a tremendous job defensively,” he said. “Holding a team to five points in the third quarter I think that says a lot about how a team plays defensively.”

Austin Cook came off the bench to lead Fowler with nine points, while Ty Simon added 12 points for P-W.
