After a year without a representative at the WIAA State Boys Golf Tournament, Manitowoc County will be sending two players — Roncalli’s Jimmy Albright and Manitowoc Lincoln’s Sasha Oosting.
Albright will compete in Division 2 while Oosting will take part in Division 1 at the tournament, which begins on Monday at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison. Oosting won’t have to wait long to see how she fares, with a tee time of 7:18 a.m., while Albright will tee off five hours later at 12:18 p.m. with each beginning action on hole No. 10.
This is Albright’s second trip to State after having been part of the Jets squad his sophomore season which qualified as a team.
“Jimmy definitely has an edge having had played the course before,” said Roncalli coach John Haug. “He got to learn the whole and what to do and not to do on each one.”
Haug says there will be a lot of good players competing but he doesn’t see why Albright can’t finish in the top five in Division 2.
“Jimmy knows what has to be done, now it’s just up to him to do it.” Haug added.
For Oosting, competing as a sophomore at State is a rare accomplishment, but it’s even rarer to be competing against boys, Lincoln coach Max Ashenbrener said.
“Sasha has the most confidence I’ve ever seen from a high school golfer, either boy or girl,” Ashenbrener said. “She knows how to avoid the pitfalls which might get other golfers, so I’m not surprised by her success.”
Ashenbrener also said Oosting has been putting in a lot of work in practice and has had a strong run of form in her last few outings which if she can continue a top 20 finish should be within her reach.
