The Roncalli boys soccer team faced an onslaught of shots from visiting NEW Lutheran on Tuesday, as the Jets surrendered three first-half goals in rout to a 4-1 loss.
The Blazers let loose 30 attempts — 17 of which were on target — compared to six for Roncalli.
Lutheran jumped out to a 3-0 halftime advantage, scoring in the 12th, 21st and 29th minutes before adding its final goal in the 47th minute.
Roncalli kept battling and ended up finding the back of the net in the 69th minute on a goal by Mike Theile set up by an assist from teammate Reed Waldhart.
Prior to Theile’s score, the Jets best opportunity came 14 minutes earlier when Waldhart blasted a free kick off the crossbar, which set up a scramble for the ball in front of Lutheran’s net. Roncalli failed to capitalize, however, as the Blazers’ defense was able to extinguish the scoring chance.
Tuesday’s result was the smallest margin of victory between the two sides since a 2-1 Lutheran win in September 2010. Since then, the Jets had been outscored by the Blazers by a total of 31-3 in five matches.
Next up for the Jets is a road match with Algoma.
