Class 3A

West High (17-1) vs. C.R. Washington (14-4)

* When: 5 p.m.

* Prior meeting: Cedar Rapids Washington 1, West 0 on April 4

* Players to watch: For West, dynamic midfielder Mueng Sunday, forwards Paris Martins and Justin Baker are just the tip of the iceberg. West substitutes liberally and never loses anything when it goes to the bench. Wash is led by Kimu Kasha, Jack Sundermann and Austin Bergstrom, who have combined for 24 goals and 15 assists.

* Comment: Someone at the IHSAA has a sense of humor to match these two teams. Top-ranked West’s only loss of the year was in the first game of the season to fourth-ranked Washington. The Trojans have won 17 in a row since then. Wash lost to Cedar Rapids Prairie, Cedar Falls, City High and Cedar Rapids Kennedy. West returns as the defending champion that did not allow a goal last year in its run through the bracket. The winner plays Kennedy or Sioux City West on Friday.

City High (15-2) vs. W.D.M. Dowling (12-4)

* When: 5:15 p.m. today.

* Prior meeting: None.

* Players to watch: Thirteen players have scored goals for West Des Moines Dowling and for City. The Maroons are led by Josh Harry, Peter Odia, Luke Davis and Tom Bowman, who have accounted for 26 goals and 20 assists. The keeper has given up 14 goals. City has allowed 12. City’s attack is led by forward Fernando Pacheco, just named the MVC Divisional Player of the Year, and his brother, midfielder Alejandro Pacheco. But City has other threats like Luke Mennen, Adam Nicholson and Grant Lewis.

* Comment: Third-ranked City’s only losses were to West High and Cedar Rapids Kennedy, both state qualifiers. Seventh-ranked Dowling’s losses were to Bettendorf, Ankeny, Johnston and Creighton Prep of Omaha. The Little Hawks were upset last year in the first round by West Des Moines Valley and are determined to avoid that situation again. The winner plays Ankeny or Johnston on Friday.

Class 1A

Regina (12-1) vs. Riverside (Oakland) (12-5)

* When: 12:15 p.m. today.

* Prior meeting: None.

* Players to watch: Aaron Schmitz, A.J. Adam, Jacob Adam and Nicolas Ziniel lead Regina’s attack, combining for 31 goals and 14 assists. The Regals have given up only five goals all season with Aidan Mullen in net. Riverside has four players (Tanner Ford, Brady Ryun, Malachi Dillon, Michael Bertacini) who’ve combined for 38 goals and 20 assists. All four are juniors. Riverside has surrendered 21 goals.

* Comment: Top-ranked Regina’s only loss was to Class 3A Muscatine. That and the inability to fill out the schedule with so many postponements cost the Regals the top seed (to second-ranked Dyersville Beckman). This is Riverside’s first appearance at the state tournament. The winner plays West Liberty or Waterloo Columbus on Friday. Columbus is the team that knocked Regina out a year ago.

West Liberty (9-6-3) vs. Waterloo Columbus (14-2)

* When: 12:05 p.m. today.

* Prior meeting: None.

* Players to watch: The Comets returned Rafael Ibarra and Raudel Fierro off their fourth-place team a year ago and they’ve helped make up for the graduation of outstanding forward Dalvi Acevedo. They’ve combined for 24 goals and six assists. The Sailors are led by Day Reh and Isaac Squires, who’ve combined for 23 goals and six assists.

* Comment: The third-ranked Sailors’ losses came early to Solon and Waterloo West. They had to win a shootout Tuesday to advance. The Comets’ losses came to Regina, Solon, Mount Vernon, Marion, Davenport Assumption and Muscatine. This is the second consecutive trip to Des Moines for the 11th-ranked Comets, and they have a tall task with the defending Class 1A champions. But the Comets “upset” No. 4 Holy Trinity to qualify, so they’re accustomed to the giant-killer role.
