Entering the weekend’s WIAA Boys State Individual tennis tournament, Roncalli coach Bob Nelson wasn’t shy about what he wanted his team to accomplish — get a medalist.
That’s exactly what Nelson got on Saturday when Jets junior Brett Giesen took sixth in Division 2 singles.
“We never had a medalist until six years ago,” Nelson said. “So now to have six straight medalists is really quite a run.”
Giesen (26-7) won his first match of the fifth-place bracket, defeating senior Thomas Ware (23-8) of the Prairie School in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 before falling to Saint Thomas More junior Peter Jaeger (24-4), also in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0 to finish sixth.
Those finishing sixth or better receive a medal, meaning Giesen did exactly what was needed to extend the Roncalli record for most consecutive seasons with a medalist, although Nelson feels Giesen has great chance to return next season.
“Brett is only a junior so there’s no reason we can’t be back here again next year,” Nelson added. “Especially with two of the kids ahead of him being seniors, there’s only room for improvement.”
Giesen shared in his coach’s perspective.
“My expectations were really high entering the tournament,” Giesen said. ” I was really pleased to earn a seed and I’m excited to continue the streak. I’m really confident I can get back and place in the top four and keep it going another year.”
