Prep boys tennis roundup: Roncalli's bid for 5th straight EWC title falls short

By

The Roncalli boys tennis team lost its bid for a fifth-consecutive Eastern Wisconsin Conference title as the Jets suffered a 4-3 loss to Plymouth at the Kohler Quad this weekend.

While the Jets earned a 5-2 win over Stevens Point Pacelli and and a 4-3 win over Kohler, the loss to Plymouth put them two point behind the Panthers in the final EWC standings as the Jets had 49 to Plymouth’s 51.

“One more win versus Plymouth and we would have won (the EWC),” Roncalli coach Bob Nelson said in a press release. “It’s been a great season though and the boys gave it all they had.”

No. 2 Zach LeVene was the only singles player for Roncalli to go undefeated at the quad while teammates Brett Geisen (No. 1), Killian Krummel (No. 3) and Anthony Marchelewski (No. 4) went 2-1.

The No. 2 pair of Hayden Boettcher-Brady Boettcher had the best doubles record for the Jets as they were 2-1. Ben Brotz-Joel Ledvina (No. 1) were 1-2 while Jackie Zhang-Joe Brotz (No. 3) went 0-3.

Manitowoc Lincoln went undefeated as it first topped Oconomowoc 6-1, then beat Beaver Dam 6-1 and finished the day off with a 4-3 win over West Bend East.

Instead of a tournament format, teams played a round robin — triple dual meet — against three teams. The teams Lincoln faced it had not seen during the season.

In singles, Derek Rohrer (No. 2) led Lincoln by going 3-0 while at No. 4 singles Ryan Specht was 2-1. Ethan Just (No. 1) and Jim Lee (No. 3) each were 1-2. Rohrer won the deciding match in the Ships’ win over West Bend East.

The Ships’ doubles teams were each undefeated at the quad. Jonah Mrozinsky-Parker Wood had a pair of wins at No. 3 doubles while Mrozinsky paired with Nick Horswill for another win at No. 3 doubles.

Michael Olson-David Wronkowski earned a pair of wins at No. 2 doubles and one win at No. 1 doubles while Jake Rohrer-Nick Schroeder earned two wins at No. 1 doubles and one win at No. 2 doubles.

Lincoln finishes the season with a 13-4 overall dual meet record and will next play at subsectionals on Tuesday at Fox Cities Racquet Club in Appleton.
