Sheboygan North boys cross country coach Kevin Herber was hoping to land three of his runners in the Top 5 at the 10-team Sheboygan County Invitational at Sheboygan Lutheran High School on Tuesday. They did him one better.

The Golden Raiders finished with three runners in the Top 4 — including individual winner Trevor Damkot — as Sheboygan North finished with 46 points for its fourth-straight county championship.

“After last year, with us losing a couple of seniors from our State-qualifying team, the goal starting the season was to bounce back and win the county meet, so we’re very happy overall,” Herber said. “We’re a little bit worn out so it was all about guts today. We talked about digging deep. … Overall just very pleased.”

Damkot — a senior whose father Randy won the county title for Sheboyag South 29 years ago as a senior — won the 5,000-meter course in 16 minutes, 56 seconds. He was second last season in 16:43.

North’s Shamus Zenk (17:19) was second while Oostburg’s Adam Daane (17:36) finished third after taking a late lead over North’s Thomas Lang (17:37), who finished fourth.

Sheboygan Lutheran’s Jake Jurss (18:01) rounded out the Top 5 — the Crusaders finished second (74) — and he was follwed by Plymouth’s Tom Jankowski (18:05), Sheboygan South’s Eric Fischer (18:06), Cedar Grove-Belgium’s Peter Merritt (18:20), Howards Grove’s Eric Dvorachek (18:22) and South’s Zach Klokow (18:24).

“I was happy (to win). It was my goal coming into the race,” Damkot said, acknowledging that he had hoped to finish with a time better than what he did. “It was hot but it was fun. I was happy about (winning the team title) and that’s what we were expecting. It was a good race.”

On the girls side, Random Lake senior Delaney Sinnen was unchallenged on the 4,000-meter course en route to repeating as county champion in 14:57. She finished ahead of Plymouth’s Julia Novotny (16:12) and became the second person in the event’s history to best the 15-minute mark — something she hoped to do last year when she finished in 15:10.

Haley Johnson of Plymouth set the meet record with a 14:44 in 2011.

“Obviously it’s a great honor (to repeat). Most people don’t have that opportunity,” Sinnen said. “Since it’s such a good meet, I just came into it like any other meet and I just wanted to do my best and do what was best for the team.”

In addition to Novotny, the Panthers had Top 10 finishes from Brooke Koehn (fifth, 16:23) and Abby Payne (sixth, 16:27) as the Panthers won their third straight team title with 38 points.

North was second with 60 as Katie Reinemann (16:35), Ayanna Stewart (16:39) and Erin Schmitt (16:48) were seventh, eighth and ninth. Rounding out the Top 10 were the Crusaders’ Tess Leibham (third, 16:16) and Cedar Grove-Belgium’s Lily Paul (10th, 17:02).

“The girls did awesome. They have a lot of heart, they are working hard, they are pushing each other, they have a great attitude and hopefully we’ll go far the rest of the season,” Plymouth assistant coach Tina Henriksen said. “The goal was to win and it means they are gearing up for the postseason. They know how hard work pays off and this is one of the rewards.”
