Prep cross country: Valders' boys 8th at Len Nikolai Invite

By

The Valders boys finished eighth and the host Lincoln boys placed 12th at the Len Nikolai Invite Saturday at Meadow Links Golf Course.

Derek Doescher (17:31) led the Vikings with a 26th place finish. All five of the Vikings scoring runners finished within 51 seconds of one another. It was exactly the type of pack-running that Valders head coach Bill Dietrich wanted to see.

“We focused on…team pacing and running together because there are so many teams in this race,” Dietrich said. “We really want to focus, this time of the year, on staying together as a team and working a little bit faster.”

Dietrich was happy to provide his team with the opportunity to measure itself against top-level competition. Four of the boys teams at Saturday’s event were ranked in the latest Wisconsin Cross Country Coaches Association Poll, including Valders, which sits at No. 15 in Division 2.

“You never get a chance to run against Preble and Stevens Point,” Dietrich said. “That’s good for the guys, they know they’re not Superman. They go to another race and they get a score of 20 and it really doesn’t mean anything because they didn’t have to work hard to get it. You want to have that competition to make them run faster.”

Michael Thompson (17:37) paced the Ships’ boys squad, taking 30th individually.

The Valders girls, led by Beth Evans’ 28th place finish, took 10th as a team.

Karly Rosinsky was Lincoln’s top girls finisher, taking 60th with a time of 16:58.

“I’m happy with how my guys and girls ran today. I thought we had some really good performances,” Lincoln head coach Michael Bubolz said. “I think we’re right on track to continue to progress until the end of the year. I’m very happy with the kids today.”

For the second consecutive year, Stevens Point Area Senior High claimed both the boys and girls titles.
