Prep cross country: Valders boys claim OC crown

By

A trio of top-10 finishers helped the Valders boys cross country team to the team title at the Olympian Conference meet in Brillion Thursday.

Derek Doescher (17:16, second place) led the Vikings and was the area’s top boys finisher. Joining Doescher in the top-10 were teammates Thomas Schwoerer (17:36, fifth) and Zach Leschke (17:50, 10th).

“We knew we had to run hard and put as many runners out front as possible,” Valders head coach Bill Dietrich said. “That’s what we did.”

Roncalli, who placed second as a team in the boys race, was paced by the fourth-place finish of Tomerot Lambert, who ran a time of 17:29. Greg Greif of St. Mary Central won the boys race in 16:41.

The Vikings took second in the girls race. Beth Evans was Valders’ top runner, placing eighth with a time of 16:45. Brillion’s Becca Van Thiel was the girls winner in 16:49.

Manitowoc Lutheran’s Rachel Winter was the top local girls finisher; her time of 16:16 was good enough for a third-place finish.
