Prep football: Lodel named AP All-State

By

Manitowoc Lincoln senior offensive lineman Wesley Lodel was named honorable mention All-State by the Associated Press on Monday.

Lodel, a three-year starter for the Ships, was recently named honorable mention All-State by the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association.

“When we have good linemen in here, they are always compared with Doug Free and Chase Wetenkamp and those kids,” Lincoln head coach John Dixon said. “He really is probably the closest to that level of football player that we’ve had here.”

That’s quite the compliment considering Free is currently enjoying a career in the NFL as a member of the Dallas Cowboys and Wetenkamp eventually went on to play for Western Illinois University.

In Dixon’s opinion, Lodel’s tenacity is one of his best qualities.

“Wes is the type of kid who just has that little extra. I call it ornery,” Dixon said. “He finishes things. He relishes the physical contact.”

While there has been no shortage of accolades given to Lodel this postseason, his coach knows that individual attention was never Lodel’s focus.

“Knowing Wes, I don’t think that’s something that he identified as a goal all along,” Dixon said. ” I think he just wanted to be successful and win football games and this is kind of a nice added benefit to the success that we had.”
