A third-quarter rally by the Manitowoc Lutheran football team came up just short as the Lancers fell to host Ozaukee 28-20 in overtime Friday night.
The Warriors got on the board first, courtesy of a three-yard run from Kevin Beckmann.
Lutheran quickly found an answer in the form of Ethan Hillmer, who punched it on from a yard out. With the extra point tacked on, the Lancers took a 7-6 lead at the end of the first.
The second stanza was all about Ozaukee’s Nick Wojciechowski, who scampered for touchdown runs of 28 and 65 yards, giving the Warriors a 20-7 lead heading into the break.
The third quarter belonged to the Lancers. Hillmer got the scoring started when he connected with Joe Pautz on a 20-yard strike that brought Lutheran within six.
Sam Kutz found the endzone from four yards away to knot the game at 20-20, but a failed PAT kept the score that way.
After a scoreless fourth quarter, Jacob Wolff scored on a five-yard run on the first possession of overtime to help Ozaukee regain the lead. A two point conversion and a defensive stop helped the Warriors seal the deal.
Hillmer finished the game 4-for-9 passing for 34 yards with an interception. He also led the defensive charge with nine tackles, 2½ sacks, and an interception.
Will Kleinert picked up 60 rushing yards on 14 carries.
Lutheran kicks off the home portion of its schedule Friday when it hosts Cedar Grove-Belgium in a non-conference showdown at 7 p.m.
