Prep girls basketball: Columbus wins as Elizabeth Manlick moves up scoring list

By

Elizabeth Manlick moved into third place on Marshfield Columbus’ all-time scoring list and she carried her team to a 49-44 victory Thursday night as the Dons tripped up Stanley-Boyd in the seventh place Cloverbelt crossover game at the Columbus high school gym.

The Dons led the entire way and seemed in control. But a funny thing happened on the way to the winner’s circle as the Orioles pushed back in the final period.

In fact, they put quite a scare into the home town team when the Orioles’ Halie Milas hit a 3-pointer to cut the Columbus lead to 41-39, with three minutes to play.

Back-to-back hoops by Hannah Kruse and Manlick righted the ship before Stanley-Boyd’s Jamie Reit drilled her fifth and final 3-pointer to cut it back to three. Kruse hit another short jumper the Dons prevailed.

“Elizabeth always comes through when we need it,” said Columbus coach Bryan DeVries. “She didn’t come out of the game tonight. Stanley’s got some good shooters. Our plan was not to front the post if we didn’t have to. We got away with that until the end when we got some baskets down low. We’ve been playing pretty well and now we’ll have our hands full with Port Edwards.”

The Dons play Port Edwards Tuesday kicking off tournament play.

Manlick’s 27 points on the night puts her at 1,129 points, behind only Laura Bertram (1,272) and Erika Schmidt (1,574) on the Dons’ all-time scoring list.

“We played well,” said Manlick, who shot 10 for 14 from the field and 7 of 8 from the charity stripe. “Their offense was good but our defense shut their shooters down for the most part. We hustled back and that helped. We’ve practiced free throws a lot this season and it paid, off, especially tonight.”

“It’s tough to dig yourselves out of a hole as big as the one we dug tonight,” S-B coach Hailey Zawacki said. “We didn’t adjust to their defense and we struggled in most parts of the game. Manlick’s a great player. She should keep playing somewhere. We just didn’t adjust the way we needed to.”

Reit, just a freshman, led the Orioles with 18 points and Anna Lisiecki added 14.
