Prep girls basketball roundup: Lutheran edges Roncalli

The Roncalli girls basketball team decided to play for one final shot, but came up short in a 34-33 loss to host Lutheran on Thursday night.

Catherine Taddy held the ball until five seconds remaining in the game for the Jets, but missed a shot and a last second-shot by teammate Alex Cliff fell short after two missed free throws by Lutheran to end the game.

Neither side came out shooting hot, with the Lancers holding a slim 4-2 lead after five minutes of play and only two baskets being made. MacKayla Menges drained a 3-pointer for Lutheran to account for five of her team’s first seven points to give the Lancers a 7-2 advantage.

The horn sounded to end the first quarter as Roncalli used a quick 4-1 run to bring the score to 8-6 to finish the frame. Menges led all scorers after the first quarter with her five points.

Cliff brought the Jets even at 8-8 to start the second quarter before Roncalli committed a quick foul on the other end as Julia Barthels made one of two free throws to put Lutheran back on top by one.

Paige Pethan gave the Jets their first lead of the game at 10-9 after making a running layup with just less than five minutes to go in the half.

Rachel Mocyznski, Roncalli’s leading scorer at 14 points per game, got on the board roughly halfway through the quarter with several close range shots being denied by both squads.

Mocyznski led the Jets win nine points while Arianna Neumeyer led the Lancers by the same margin.

After Mocyznski’s bucket gave the Jets a three-point lead Lutheran responded with a 6-0 run to take a 15-12 lead with just under a minute to go in the half.

The score remained the same entering halftime as a 3-pointer by Roncalli was called off after it bounced of the top of the backboard.

Midway through the third quarter, Lutheran held a tentative 19-16 lead as its leading scorer, Julia Barthels — who also averaged 14 a game — was held to just three at that point.

Roncalli led 25-21 at the end of the third quarter and just fell short in the end in a defensive slugfest.
