Prep girls basketball: Ships hold on late against Trojans

Kali Hackmann, Shawny Gabriel and Katherine Wolowicz played their final home game on Senior Night as the Manitowoc Lincoln girls basketball defeated Green Bay Southwest on Thursday 45-41.

Gabriel scored a team-high 18 points while teammate Alyssa Fischer added 10 to lead the Ships.

The Ships played neck and neck with the Trojans after Southwest took an early lead but they took their first lead of the game when Meg Wolowicz drained a 10-foot jumper to give Lincoln a 9-7 lead late in the first quarter.

The score would remain the same at the end of the frame.

Gabriel hit a baby hook to start the second quarter on the right note for the Ships.

The Trojans tied the game with a mini 4-0 run but a strong defensive effort by Hackmann helped Lincoln regain its four-point advantage at 15-11 with just over four minutes remaining in the second.

Both defenses took control on the second quarter as neither side could get a rhythm offensively with the Ships holding a narrow 17-15 lead at the half.

Lincoln’s largest lead of the half was four, and had a few opportunities to increase it to at least six before a stingy Trojans defense got a key stop.

Hackmann hit a reverse lay-up to help the Ships get over the four-point hump to lead 21-15 early in the third quarter.

She hit a pair of free throws on the next possession to extend the advantage to eight.

Southwest kept attempting to chip away at Lincoln’s lead but the Ships led 31-24 entering the fourth.

Each side began to heat up offensively in the third but Lincoln was the most efficient, outscoring the Trojans 14-9 in the frame.

A nine-point Ships advantage was trimmed to just three at 39-36 with 1:39 left in the game.

Fischer made back-to-back baskets for Lincoln to hold off the late Southwest charge.

Gabriel iced the game from the line with .9 seconds left as Lincoln finished the game an astounding 21-for-23 from the line while Southwest was 8-for-11.
