After a slow start the Marshfield girl’s hockey team kicked it into gear in the second period.
With not-so-secret weapon Paige Johnson going off for four goals the Tigers made quick work of Lakeland winning 7-1 on the strength of a four-goal second period.
“We started a little slow,” said Marshfield coach Don Larson, “but once we broke the ice in front of the net we started scoring some goals. We didn’t take Lakeland lightly.”
Johnson scored early in the first period, and after goals by Bailey Jozwiak and Kessa Schreiner, she was at it again midway through the second with two more goals, including one on a power play.
“This season’s been really good,” said sophomore Nell Eichten. “We’ve gone from basically nothing to being a team. This game was rough but we got through it.”
Added Larson: “This is the start of the next season. We did a great job in conference. Now we’re headed to Eagle River next Tuesday. That’s step two. We’re basically going step by step. That’s what we need to do to prepare for each team.”
Schuster got the Tigers’ sixth goal to start the final period before Lakeland got on the board with a goal fropm Jacie Duranso.
Johnson put on the finishing touches with her fourth goal, a laser-beam slap shot that found the back of the net at the 12:48 mark.
“We have a very young team,” sophomore Morgan Larson said. “So everyone has to step it up a little bit. Everyone’s played a notch up, putting all their effort into each game.”
Those around Johnson knows what she means to the Tigers.
“Paige means a lot”, Larson said. “She’s always encouraging everyone. Always there for pointers and tips on how to get better.”
