Prep girls soccer: Valders tops host Kewaunee

By

The No. 7-seeded Valders girls soccer team scored 12 minutes into its regional opener of the WIAA Division 3 Girls State Soccer Tournament and the Vikings held host No. 10 Kewaunee scoreless in the second half en route to a 2-1 win on Thursday.

Valders advances to play at No. 2 Oostburg at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Amanda Miller got the game’s first score on a break away on an assist by Lauren Brandl where Miller beat the defense with her speed, drew the keeper out and calmly slid the ball into the net.

Two minutes later Kewaunee answered to knot score at 1-1, but in the 42nd minute Michaela Meidl scored off a corner kick from Brandl to give the Vikings their final margin of victory.

“Michaela just wanted the ball more and fought harder to get it against a very physical Kewaunee team,” Valders coach Brian Brandl said in an email. “(We) took total control late in the match with great ball possession and better conditioning.”

Alena Braun had 11 saves for Valders, which went into a five-defender defensive formation after the second score. Angela Brandl moved to sweeper and snuffed out any Kewanee chances to score.

The Vikings had 79 throw-ins — at least double a normal amount according to coach Brandle — and won 54 of them.
