Prep girls soccer: Valders tripped up by Oostburg

Morgan Kelly scored in the 77th minute on an assist by Angela Brandl but it wasn’t enough as the No. 7-seeded Valders girls soccer team fell to host No. 2 Oostburg 2-1 on Saturday in a WIAA Division 3 Girls State Soccer Tournament regional final.

A pair of goals by Oostburg’s Maranda Huibregtse in the 17th and 33rd minutes put the Flying Dutchmen up 2-0 at halftime.

Vikings’ coach Brian Brandl said in an e-mail that he was pleased his team never gave up, evidenced by the fact that they scored with three minutes remaining while trying to climb back into the match against the No. 3-ranked team in the state.

“This is the first season we could say that we truly competed with the top teams in the state,” Brandl said. “I have all the respect in the world for Oostburg, but that was anyone’s match. The ball bounced their way this time.”

Alena Braun was in net for Valders and made 11 saves.
