Manitowoc Lincoln golfer Sasha Oosting competed with the boys all season long, and most of the time left the course with the best round.
Oosting, this years HTR Media Golf Player of the Year, shot a two-under 70 to win the Manitowoc County Invite at The Golf Course at Branch River, tied for second (76) at sectionals before finishing tied for ninth (5-over, 149) in Division 1 at State.
“Sasha had a great season,” said Lincoln coach Max Ashenbrener. “The weather has been brutal, we even competed in the snow our first two meets, so for her to be accomplishing what she is is amazing.”
She also added another honor last month when the Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin named her to the honorable mention All-State team.
Since there’s no girls golf team available for Oosting, she competes on the boys team but tees off at 85 percent of what the boys do, but it’s not from a lack of power according to Ashenbrener.
“She has the most power I’ve ever seen from a girl,” Ashenbrener added. “Plus I’ve seen her outdrive a lot of the guys too.”
Entering State, Ashenbrener thought a top-20 finish was within reach for Oosting but wasn’t shocked in the least by her top-10 showing.
“Sasha’s work ethic is fantastic,” Ashenbrener said. “The time and effort she put in really paid off.”
Oosting missed sectionals by one stroke last year, which according to Ashenbrener drove her to succeed.
“All season she kept getting more and more confidence,” Ashenbrener said. “When she won the County Invite it really jump started her season.”
Now Oosting, just a sophomore, has two more years to improve her game while striving to return to State next season.
