Prep golfers begin swing toward state meets

The ultra-talented Lakeview High boys’ golf team is ranked No. 2 in the state in Division 1, but to find out if the team can live up to that ranking, the Spartans will have to get to the state finals.

And the first step toward that goal begins for the Spartans on Friday, when Lakeview travels to Eldorado Golf Course in Mason for a Division 1 district tournament, as the MHSAA prep golf tourney starts throughout the state today.

The top six teams and the top six individuals not on the top six teams at districts advance to next week’s regionals. Then, the top finishers at regionals earn a berth in the MHSAA state finals, which will take place June 14-15 (including D-3 at Bedford Valley Golf Club).

Districts begin Wednesday for three of the other four city other boys’ golf squads. Harper Creek will host a D-2 district at Binder Park Golf Course; Pennfield will be at a D-4 district at Highland Hills GC in Grand Rapids; and St. Philip will be at a D-4 district at Thornapple Creek in Kalamazoo.

The city’s other boys’ golf team, Battle Creek Central, will join Lakeview at Eldorado on Friday.

Lakeview will host a D-1 regional on Friday, June 7, on its home course, Cedar Creek Golf Club. Other local regionals will take place June 6 at Gull Lake View West (D-2) and The Medalist (D-3), and June 7 at Marshall Country Club (D-2).
