Prep gymnastics: Lincoln's DeZeeuw garners Gymnast of the Year honors

Freshmen rarely qualify for State — especially in the all-around — Manitowoc Lincoln gymnastics coach Jacque Bartow recently said, which is why Ships’ freshman Alyssa DeZeeuw has been named the 2013 HTR Media All-Area Gymnastics Gymnast of the Year.

DeZeeuw finished 17th out of 26 individuals in the all-around competition with a score of 35.216 at the WIAA Division 1 State Gymnastics Championships in Wisconsin Rapids. The score was just below her season-best of 35.75 and she was named a second-team All-State selection in Division 1 in the event.

When the All-Eastern Valley Conference gymnastics teams were announced earlier this month, DeZeeuw was one of two freshman to make the All-EVC firs team, along with Oshkosh’s Theresa Richards. She was also the EVC champion on bars.

“Alyssa had an outstanding season for a first-season gymnast at the varsity level,” Bartow said. “She knew what she had to do and she got it done.”

Prior to joining the Ships’ varsity program, DeZeeuw had been a YMCA gymnast since an early age, but there are several differences between high school and YMCA gymnastics — a major one being that the top attainable score won’t always be a 10.

Depending on the routine, the top attainable score might not be 10 in varsity where every routine starts off at a 10 and is deducted from their for the Y. This means gymnasts who try harder routines are awarded more to start with a higher max score.

“Some gymnasts have a hard time transitioning between the two but not Alyssa,” Bartow added. “We took things things a little slower this season as not to overwhelm her but next season we’ll be looking to add some more difficulty to her routines.”
