GRAND LEDGE

Hannah Orwat led all scorers with 22 points and her twin sister, Lindsay, added 20 to lead Grand Ledge to a comfortable 61-40 win over Waverly on Thursday night.

The nonleague win improved the Comets to 7-1, and broke a losing streak to the Warriors (4-6) that began when the two schools were archrivals in the former Capital Area Conference.

“This is a very big win for us, it means a lot,” Hannah Orwat said. “We had this one on our calendar. I’ve never beaten them, so it’s good to see that the work we’re doing in the gym every day is starting to pay off for us.”

The Comets started slowly, scoring just four points in the first six minutes of play, but ended the first quarter on a 7-0 run in the final 1:43 of the first quarter and never looked back.

Waverly was intent on slowing down the game and working a very patient half-court offense, and it worked at first. Before the late Comet run, the game was tied 4-4.

After that, Grand Ledge started to rebound the ball and was able to open up the game on the fast break, taking a 24-13 lead at the half.

“We’re supposed to control the tempo, and we didn’t do it,” Warriors interim head coach Matt Oppenheim said.

“We know that when we don’t, teams can get out and run on us.”

Victoria Milton led Waverly with 21 points, including a three to start the third quarter, but Grand Ledge went on an 11-0 run from there to open up a 35-16 advantage and was never threatened again.

Hannah Orwat scored half of her 22 points in the fourth quarter, which the Comets finished with a 9-1 run to make the final score 61-40.

“We were really patient on defense, maintaining that position and holding our focus the whole time,” Grand Ledge coach David Jones said. “We stressed getting the ball inside, and later in the game that opened things up for us.”

Jones said that he tried to convey the historic importance of the win to his team.

“I grew up in Grand Ledge, and I was telling the girls that when I was a kid, our rival was Waverly,” he said. “The girls know each other, the play a lot of ball together, so it was a big deal to go out and get a win tonight.”
