Former Smyrna football player and assistant Daniel Childs has returned to District 7-AAA a year after leaving his alma mater for Gallatin.

Childs, who was the Green Wave offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for head coach Mark Williams in 2012, began teaching business classes at Blackman High this past week.

Childs will be the quarterbacks coach at Blackman, head coach Philip Shadowens said. He said current quarterbacks coach Alex Robins, who is a former MTSU assistant, may retire. Robins has been a volunteer coach at Blackman in recent years.

Childs played for Shadowens at Smyrna as a quarterback and receiver.

Childs was previously hired at Smyrna High as a quarterbacks coach and later offensive coordinator by Matt Williams, who replaced Shadowens after the 2007 season.

“Obviously, I really thought a lot of him,” Shadowens said.

“He’s a good football coach. When we had a chance to hire him, we were able to take advantage of that. That helps our program.”

Childs helped develop former Smyrna quarterback Steve Wilson, who is now a wide receiver at Tennessee Tech.

Wilson had never played quarterback before taking over the play-calling.

He helped lead Smyrna to the Class 6A state championship game in 2010 during his senior year.
