Jacksonville University sophomore quarterback Steven Hughes finished with a school-record and FCS season-high 509 passing yards, but it wasn’t enough in a 45-27 loss against Butler last week.
The former Palm Bay Pirates quarterback completed 25-of-61 passes with three touchdowns and three interceptions. He surpassed the previous Jacksonville record of 450 yards held by Chris Horton against Morehead State in 2007.
The previous week, Hughes was named the Pioneer Football League Offensive Player of the Week after leading Jacksonville to a 69-16 victory against Warner. Making his first collegiate start, Hughes completed 15-of-20 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns.
The Dolphins’ first home loss of the season drops the team to 2-3.
Holy Trinity varsity tennis coach Mark Harrison and doubles partner J.C. Parker, of New York, won the National Men’s (40 and older) grass court doubles championship. The duo beat Neil Grover and Arthur Hernandez, of Louisiana, 6-3, 6-3.
The Bulldogs are looking for coaches for the upcoming spring season. Boys/girls tennis coaches and boys/girls assistant lacrosse coaches are needed. For information, contact the school’s athletic director, Fred Keeney, at email@example.com.
