Post-Crescent sports reporter Ricardo Arguello goes one-on-one with Neenah senior girls’ soccer player Liz Darkow:
Q: You scored the game-winning goal in Neenah’s WIAA Division 1 sectional final win over Appleton North. Where does that rank among your high school highlights?
A: Definitely right up there with the sectional final shootout victory we had against North last year. It’s awesome that we beat them back to back.
Q: What are some of your strengths as a player and what do you think you need to improve on?
A: I think having an equally strong left and right foot is something I’ve always made a priority of mine. Girls on my team can attest to how much I harp on using your left foot more often. Something I could definitely work on is placement of my crosses. As an outside, you’re setting people up to score a lot, so I want to make sure it’s a good ball, you know?
Q: If you weren’t competing in girls’ soccer, would you be playing a different sport?
A: I’ve always wanted to run track. I love running and sprinting. If I had the choice, I’d do the 100 meters or 200-meter dash and some kind of relay.
Q: Wow! You have just been awarded two VIP tickets to see any musical artist. Which artist would you see and whom would you take with you?
A: I’d be hittin’ up a Rihanna concert with a couple of my close friends. She’s one of my favorites and I don’t care what anyone thinks otherwise!
Q: What’s the most important invention of the past 50 years?
A: Cell phones! Some people’s life solely depends on their phone, and although they can cause problems, they’re usually really helpful most of the time.
Q: It’s favorites time! What’s your favorite movie?
A: “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.” Such a classic.
Q: Favorite TV show?
A: “SpongeBob SquarePants” or “ESPN.”
Q: Favorite Hollywood dream date?
A: Someone please holla at James Franco for me!
Q: Favorite vacation hot spot?
A: Vail, Colo.
Q: Favorite aspect of Neenah High School?
A: Rocket Memorial Stadium: ’nuff said.
Q: Favorite meal prepared by mom?
A: I love me some good stir-fry. Lynne usually cooks it to perfection.
Q: Favorite book?
A: Do “Where’s Waldo” books count?
Q: Favorite place to relax at home?
A: I like to sprawl out on my bedroom floor a lot.
Q: Favorite childhood toy?
A: I was all about Skip-Its as a youngin’. I could skip for days.
Q: Favorite newspaper sports reporter?
A: Can’t recall his name … Ricardo something maybe?
Q: Word on the street is that you have quite the singing voice. Which vocalists do you point to as inspiration?
A: I mean, I can sing a little tune here and there. I get a lot of inspiration vocally from numerous artists, though, to name a few: Rihanna, Marina and the Diamonds, Frank Ocean.
Q: Congratulations! You just won $200 million in the PowerBall! What are the first three things you’re buying?
A: I’d probably go out to dinner with my family at the Melting Pot, hook myself up with some new kicks — more like a couple pairs — and buy a lifetime supply of Gushers. Yup, Gushers.
Q: Finish this sentence: “The Neenah girls’ soccer team will …
A: “… give it everything they got in the upcoming state tournament and try their best to improve from their appearance last year.”
