Post-Crescent sports reporter Ricardo Arguello goes one-on-one with Xavier singles tennis player Marissa Walsh:
Q: You’ve had a solid season. What are you doing well and where do you feel you have to improve?
A: So far this season, I’ve been happy with my baseline shots and being able to incorporate my net game that I developed playing doubles last year. One thing I feel that I have to improve upon is my consistency.
Q: How did you get into playing tennis and who influenced you during your development?
A: I started playing tennis at a young age because I always enjoyed playing sports and I wanted to try something new. I had a lot of fun playing it so I stuck with it. During my development, all of the instructors at Fox Cities Racquet Club were extremely vital to my development, especially my coach, Tony Daharsh.
Q: Are you surprised at the amount of success that you’ve had at such a young age?
A: I’ve been really happy with my success this season. I think my hard work has paid off and having great coaches and a great team has really helped.
Q: If you weren’t playing tennis in the fall, would you be playing another sport?
A: I would play volleyball because I played it in fifth and sixth grade but stopped to focus on tennis. I always enjoyed playing it, though.
Q: It’s favorites time! What’s your favorite kind of ice cream?
A: Cookie dough.
Q: TV show?
A: “Pretty Little Liars.” My friends and I get together to watch it every Tuesday night.
Q: Favorite movie?
A: “She’s the Man.” I have seen it a million times and it never gets old.
Q: Favorite book?
A: I don’t have a favorite book, but I like a lot of John Grisham’s books.
Q: Favorite aspect of Xavier High School?
A: The people. Everyone is really nice and welcoming.
Q: Favorite Hollywood actor/actress?
A: Blake Lively for favorite actress, I loved her in “Gossip Girl” and Liam Hemsworth, from “The Last Song,” for favorite actor.
Q: Favorite pro tennis player?
A: Rafa Nadal. I love to watch him play.
Q: Childhood toy?
A: Groovy Girls. I was obsessed with them. I even had my room painted groovy girl-themed.
Q: Vacation spot?
A: Italy. I went there a couple of summers ago and I loved it and want to go back someday.
Q: Favorite meal prepared by mom?
A: Pasta with red sauce and spicy sausage.
Q: Congrats! You just won two VIP vacation packages to anywhere in the world. Where are you going and whom are you taking?
A: I would go to Spain because I’ve always wanted to go there and I would take my older sister, Rebecca.
Q: Oh no! You’ve been stranded on a deserted tropical island. You have plenty of food and water but you’ve also been given the opportunity to have three things with you. What would those be?
A: I would bring my dog Zoey, my mom’s amazing homemade chocolate chip cookies and a good book to read on the beach.
