Prep roundup: Beavers claim division track title


The Harper Creek boys’ track and field team secured its first league title in seven years on Monday.

The Beavers defeated Sturgis (108-64) and Coldwater (118-52) during a five-team dual at Battle Creek Central to improve to 7-0 in the conference.

“After last year, a lot of people probably didn’t expect this,” said Harper Creek coach Larry Quick. “But we worked hard and the next goal that we’re looking at is regionals.”

SJV Jamboreee at Klinger Lake GC: Centreville won the four-team event with a 189, while Bronson was second with a 200.

Scoring for the Vikings were Jonah Houtz (44), Austin Pierson and Robert O’Rourke (51s) and Patrick Brabon (54).

SCAA Jamboree at Cedar Creek GC: Hillsdale Academy won the seven-team event with a 160. Climax-Scotts was third with a 193, St. Philip was third with a 203 and Colon was sixth with a 219.

Scoring for C-S were Cody Moody (45), Josh Fleck (47), Mitchell Vosburg (48) and Anson Mannes (53).

St. Philip’s top golfers were Fred Hallacy (45), Nate Davis (50), Trent Bartsh and Brent Finnila (54s).

Colon’s scorers were Brett Prell (48), Kale Schumacher, Chase Farrand and Eveny Vigil (57s).


Harper Creek 12-9, (at) Otsego 1-4: In Game 1, Harper Creek’s Taylor Shellenberger got the win over five innings with two strikeouts. At the plate for the Beavers, Bri Burritt had three hits with four RBIs, Haley Burritt had three hits and Shellenberger had a three-run homer, the first of her career. Shellenberger got the Game 2 victory with three strikeouts, helping Harper Creek stay perfect at 20-0 on the season. Christa Moody had two doubles, Jozlin Johnson had two hits with three RBIs, Shellenberger had two hits, Paige Shellenberger had two hits, Haley Burritt had two hits and two RBIs and Kaycee Klaren had two hits and three RBIs.

Bronson 6-11, (at) Homer 3-0: In Game 1, Bronson’s Skyler Sobeski earned the complete-game win with five strikeouts while allowing three hits. Offensively for the Vikings, Kinslea Blouin and Liz Baker each had two hits with a double and an RBI. For Homer, Stephanie Osborn had two hits with a double and an RBI. In Game 2, Lindsey Sikorski earned the win for Bronson (18-1) with six strikeouts over five innings. At the plate for the Vikings, Baker had three hits including a double and a home run with three RBIs, while Bystry, Kelsey Scheenks and Hannah Hoover had two hits apiece.


St. Philip 7-6, (at) Camden-Fontier 6-9: In Game 1 for the Tigers, Matt Parks earned his first win of the season while Jon Niland picked up the save. Offensively, Nick Hurst had two hits with a double and two runs scored, while Zach Spiegla also had two hits. In Game 2, Hurst had three hits with two doubles and Hunter Haley tossed six strikeouts in taking the loss.

Jackson Lumen Christi 7-1, (at) Coldwater 6-11: In Game 1, Grant Maurer, Skylar Reincke, Kelvin Miller and Zach DeMeester each had two hits and an RBI in the loss for Coldwater. In Game 2, Maurer allowed three hits over five innings with two strikeouts to get the win for the Cardinals (8-7). Jeremy Harrell had a two-run double, Miller had a two-run single, Cam Sielken had two RBIs and Brendan Spangler doubled.


Pennfield 2, (at) Kalamazoo Christian 1: Madison Rench and Elizabeth Jarrard each scored to lift Pennfield to the win. Hanna Boles and Kayler Beech had an assist apiece, while Sam Tuttle made 13 saves in goal for the Panthers (8-5, 3-2 KVA).

(AT) Marshall 6, Sturgis 1: Bri Kalisz had two goals and two assists for Marshall as the Redhawks improved to 12-1 overall and 5-1 in the SMAC East Division. Sydney Reichenbaugh added two goals and an assist with Chelsea Tobias and Abbey Ufkes each getting a goal and Layla Harkey and Tierra Orban each adding an assist.

(At) Coldwater 2, Harper Creek 1 (2OT): Cristina Fenske scored the game-winner for Coldwater with 3:15 left in the second overtime on an assist from Becca Harmon. Miranda Caitlin also scored on an assist from Harmon, while Shelby Bowers made six saves in goal for the Cardinals (5-4-1, 2-4 SMAC East). Harper Creek’s Mari Baird scored on an assist from Chae Brandt, while Elise Christleb made six saves.

(At) Lakeview 8, B.C. Central 0: Mackenzie Wilxox had two goals and two assists for Lakeview, while Amanda Andrews also scored twice in the win. Also for the Spartans, Rem Mawi, Milan Morrissette, Emma Karls and Ashley Andrews each scored, while Ashley Andrews also had two assists.

(At) Quincy 2, Hillsdale 0: Cailtn Hines had a goal and an assist while Kenzie Moore also scored in the win for the Orioles (7-2, 5-1 Independent Soccer League).
