Freshman Andrew Walker shot a 2-under-par 71 to earn individual medalist honors and help the Lakeview boys’ golf team win its fifth consecutive MHSAA district championship on Friday at Eldorado Golf Course.
Lakeview — ranked No. 2 in Division 1 — scored a 291 on the day, one stroke away from matching its school-record score of 290 that it’s notched twice this season.
Also for the Spartans, seniors Landon Osborne and Matt Garland had 73s, sophomore Gabe Penegor had a 76, and sophomore Matt Alderink had a no-count 78.
Battle Creek Central was scheduled to play at the district, but did not compete. Lakeview will host a D-1 regional next Friday at Cedar Creek Golf Club.

D-4 at Thornapple Creek: Four local individuals qualified for regionals on Wednesday: St. Philip junior Fred Hallacy (83), St. Philip freshman Brendan Gausselin (90), Climax-Scotts junior Josh Fleck (93) and Homer sophomore Hunter Weeks (95). They advanced to next Thursday’s regional at Milham Park GC in Kalamazoo.
Climax-Scotts just missed a regional berth as a team, finishing seventh with a 401. Aside from Fleck, C-S received a 101 from junior Anson Mannes, a 103 from junior Cody Moody, a 104 from senior Mitchell Vosburg and a no-count 137 from junior Weston Williams.
St. Philip finished ninth with a 421. Aside from Hallacy and Gausselin, the Tigers received 124s from juniors Brent Finnila and Trenton Bartsch.
Colon placed 10th with a 461. For the Magi, sophomore Kale Schumacher had a 104, freshman Brett Prell a 105, freshman Florencio Vigil a 124, sophomore Chase Farrand a 128 and junior Jonathan Wyant had a no-count 141.
Homer did not place, as it had only two golfers. Aside from Weeks, the Trojans’ Shaun Patrick shot a 110.
DISTRICT GIRLS’ SOCCER
D-1: Portage Central 4, Lakeview 1 (Thu.): Mackenzie Wilcox scored Lakeview’s goal against P-Central, and Maddy Olsen made 10 saves in the nets for the Spartans (12-5).
