Lakeview High had a good showing at the Rock N Run Cross Country Invitational at Dowagiac on Thursday as the boys’ team brought home a first-place finish and the the girls’ squad took second.
Forrest Cope finished second overall with a time of 16:35 to lead the Lakeview boys’ team to victory as the Spartans had a team score of 52, good enough to beat out 13 other teams including second-place Bridgman, which came in at 85.
“We wanted to go out and run to our potential and we did that today,” said Lakeview coach Jake Zimmerman. “Forrest was out quite a bit in front of everybody, but the next three or four guys on our team were all within 15 seconds or so and they were really pushing each other.”
Rounding out Lakeview’s top five boys’ runners were Brandon Van Oosten in fourth (17:14), Jon Haadsma in sixth (17:20), Colin Read in eighth (17:40) and Nate Jones in 11th (17:47).
The Spartans girls’ team had a score of 66, behind St. Joseph, which took first place with 52 points.
The Lakeview girls’ team was led by freshman Stephanie Niemann, who came in at 20:47, good enough for a ninth-place overall finish.
Lakeview’s other top five: Taylor Coyer in 10th (20:57), Marie Bridges in 12th (21:13), Maggie Ferrell in 17th (21:28) and Megan Riegle in 18th (21:30).
“We ran well and we kind of packed together,” said Lakeview girls’ coach Becky Pryor. “We got six of the top 25 so that was pretty cool.”
Saline 3, (at) Coldwater 0: Coldwater played a tough opponent in its last regular-season game as the Cardinals fell to Saline, which posted a 14-1-3 regular season record. Coldwater (14-4) goalies Ian Wright and Alex Schein recorded seven and five saves, respectively. The Cardinals begin district play at home against Marshall on Monday.
Leslie 4, (at) Olivet 1: Playing in its final regular-season game, Olivet got a goal from Tyler Andrews, assisted by Kane Spotts. Jared Miller had six saves in nets for the Eagles. Olivet (3-12) hosts Parchment in the first round of district play on Monday
Mendon 3, (at) Athens 0: Class C No. 3-ranked Mendon defeated Class D No. 7-ranked Athens in three games, 16-25, 22-25 and 13-25. For Athens (23-8-3), Jenny Smittendorf had 14 assists and seven digs; Tesha Swank had 15 digs, four kills and four blocks; Audrey Oswalt had seven kills; Ashley Smittendorf had 15 digs; Allison Fuller had 21 digs and three kills; Hailee Hurst had three kills, five digs and three blocks; and Kelcie Weeks had seven digs.
Bronson 3, (at) Centreville
1: Class C No. 6-ranked Bronson came from behind to beat St. Joe Valley opponent Centreville in four games, 23-25, 25-13, 25-10 and 25-17. Bronson (32-11-3, 4-0 SJV) was led by Alexa Ratkowski’s 41 assists and seven kills. Also for the Vikings, Skyler Sobeski had 15 kills and 11 digs; Jill Pyles had five aces and five kills; Mallorie Bassage had nine kills and eight digs; and Kassidy Bystry had 28 digs.
