Marshall used a balanced attack to tip off its season with a 70-38 win in non-division girls’ basketball action at Portage Central on Tuesday night.
The Redhawks shook off some early nerves and took a 35-21 lead into the half. By the time the final buzzer sounded, everyone on the Marshall roster had scored.
“We got over our opening-game jitters and by halftime our leaders were starting to lead,” said Marshall coach Sal Konkle, who led her team to a state quarterfinals appearance last season.
Logan Kiessling led the Redhawks with 10 points and nine rebounds while Tierra Orban had nine points and five assists. Also for Marshall (1-0), Layla Harkey had nine points and six steals and Nikki Tucker added seven points and six rebounds.
Climax-Scotts 36, (at) Lawrence 30: Despite scoring just two points in the fourth quarter, Climax-Scotts held on to win this tightly-contested non-league game. The Panthers’ Mary Smith led the way with 21 points and nine boards. Also for C-S (1-0), Taylor Piper had four points and four rebounds and Sydney Macomber added four points, four steals and three assists.
(At) Gull Lake 56, Caledonia 40: Gull Lake trailed this one 11-4 early on. But the Blue Devils bounced back to take a 15-13 lead by the end of the first quarter and they never looked back from there. Transfer student Mackenzie Latt had 18 points and Kelsey Bauer had 15 to lead Gull Lake (1-0) in the win.
46, Union City 21: Katie Birch finished with seven points, four rebounds, one steal and one assist in the loss for Union City (1-1). Also for the Chargers, Rachel Sutherland had four points, two rebounds, three steals and two assists, while Haley Harty grabbed eight rebounds.
(At) Homer 53, Bronson 32: Bailey Manis led Homer with 20 points and five assists in the win. Also for Homer (1-0), Kristen Nelson added 10 points, Courtney Wilson had seven steals and Brianna Mohn grabbed seven rebounds.
Kellogg 28: Kristen Mohn had 17 points and five rebounds in the season-opening loss for Delton Kellogg. Also for the Panthers, Sarah Rendon had six points and Alicia Lindsey pulled down six rebounds.
(At) Burr Oak 34, Cal Christian 31: Burr Oak hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to hand Calhoun Christian the opening-night loss. The Cougars’ Claire Tribbett scored 13 points and Haley Flach had four points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
(At) Stevensville-Lakeshore 72, Lakeview 30: Lakeview kept it close in the first half, trailing just 27-20 at the intermission. But a barrage of three-pointers in the second half doomed the Spartans as they drop to 0-1 on the year.
(At) Olivet 58, Lansing Waverly 49: Olivet’s Hayley Walkowski dropped in 34 points and also had five assists and five steals in the win. Also for the Eagles (1-0), Aleena Janousek had seven points, seven rebounds and five steals in the win.
