WAUSAU – The Wausau West boys wrestling team is a bit younger this season, but the Warriors got off on the right foot Thursday with a 46-24 victory over Marshfield in a Wisconsin Valley opener.

Tanner Baine, Travis Hettinga, Ben Kostrowski, Brady Lenz and Jake Whalen all picked up pinfall victories.

“We had a lot of young guys stepping into the lineup and getting that first match out of the way is good,” Wausau West coach Troy Fabry said. “I think these guys are going to have a good tournament this weekend now that they are comfortable.”

STEVENS POINT – Spencer Shirek edged out Kain Hoff at heavyweight as the Panthers downed D.C. Everest in a Wisconsin Valley Conference dual meet.

Kolten Pope picked up a win with just six seconds remaining in the final period. Fritz Schierl (126) and Nate Engle (160) picked up pins for the Panthers also.

Drew Stotmeister won via pin in under a minute for the Evergreens at 220 pounds.

Ben Feck scored twice and Jack Nuckles picked up an assist on each of Feck’s goals.

The Lumberjacks put 40 shots on net while goalie Ian Corbett faced just 10 and stopped them all.
