FERGUS FALLS – Abdifatah Abdule scored off a corner kick in the game’s 62nd minute Tuesday, lifting the St. Cloud Apollo boys soccer team to a 2-1 victory over No. 1 seed Hillcrest Lutheran in the Section 8A semifinals.

The Eagles will face Sartell at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Cloud State’s Husky Stadium in the championship game, with the winner heading to the Class A state tournament.

Hillcrest scored its goal in the game’s first minute, but Apollo’s Kevin Argueta tied the score with a goal early in the second half.

Apollo goalkeeper Cooper Gray made a key save late in the game off a free kick to preserve the lead. He made 11 saves.

Sartell 5, Bemidji 1

SARTELL – Cullen Chisholm’s goal early in the second half opened the floodgates for the Sabres, who scored five second-half goals to rout Bemidji in the 8A semifinals.

Kyle Erickson added two goals and Kempton Schneider and Ben Veitch had one apiece for Sartell (14-2-2 overall).

Goaltender Colin Johnson made five saves for the Sabres, who dominated the scoreless first half but were unable to break through until after intermission.

Sartell 3, Alexandria 2

ALEXANDRIA – The Sabres advanced to the Section 8A championship match by beating the Cardinals. Sartell plays St. Cloud Cathedral at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Husky Stadium.

The Sabres scored three second-half goals to win. Senior captain Sophie Vansurksum, Kelsey Frank and Amanda Flemming had goals for Sartell.

Central Minnesota Conference Meet

PIERZ – The Holdingford boys and girls cross country teams each took home conference titles. The boys finished with 49 points, nine points ahead of Maple Lake.

The Huskers’ girls team had 33 points to finish 12 points ahead of second-place Maple Lake. Holdingford had five runners in the top 10.

Holdingford junior Andrew Zachman won the boys race with a time of 16:42.47 while junior teammate Abe Skwira took second at 16:43.00. Pierz junior Kyle Becker (17:55.93) finished in eighth place and St. John’s Prep senior Kesley Carreras (18:35.15) finished 19th.

Eden Valley-Watkins junior Emily Donnay won the girls race with a time of 15:56.05. Holdingford freshman Jo Merten (16:25.17) took fourth place and junior teammate Emily Wolter (16:43.88) took fifth place.

Granite Ridge Conference Meet

ALBANY – The meet was postponed and will be run at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Albany.


The Tigers came out strong in a close matchup with Alexandria at Tech.

Senior Katie Heller took first place in the 50 freestyle (26.00) and second place in the 500 freestyle (5:43.91) and was on the winning 200 freestyle relay.

Other notable victories for the Tigers came from junior Megan Seehusen in diving (176.85), junior Yemaya Hanna in the 100 freestyle (59.92) and eighth-grader Emma Marek in the 100 backstroke (1:07.27).


SARTELL – Sartell’s Anna Ellis won the 200 individual medley (2:22.91) and the 100 backstroke (1:00.68) and Gabby Hagen won the 100 butterfly (1:02.49) and 50 freestyle (26.04) to lead the Sabres.

Madi Molitor won the diving event (187.20) for the Eagles.


SAUK RAPIDS – Sophomore Tana Hendrickson won the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke, while fellow sophomore Larissa Kleen won the 100 freestyle and contributed to all three winning relays to lead the Storm (5-6).

Fergus Falls 97, Rocori 87

COLD SPRING – Isabelle Schneider won the 200 freestyle (2:05.88) and Ann Alexander won the 500 freestyle (5:54.47) for the Spartans.


SAUK CENTRE – Senior Tiana Molitor set a school record in the 100 backstroke (1:03.02), was part of pool-record setting 400 freestyle relay team and won the 50 freestyle (25.79) for Sauk Centre.

The Mainstreeters’ 400 freestyle relay team of Alyssa Kohorst, Hanna Waldhart, Danielle Banal and Molitor finished in 3:50.54.

Holdingford was led by Meghan Mokhtary, who won the 200 freestyle (2:12.01) and 100 breaststroke (1:13.89).


MONTEVIDEO – Junior Gabi Sawyer won the 200 individual medley (2:26.18) and the 100 freestyle (59.83) to lead the Dutchmen.

Melrose senior Sydney Rasmussen won the 200 freestyle (2:09.06) and the 500 freestyle (5:48.83). Melrose junior Jewell Budde won diving (176.90).
